This year’s environmental theme is “Deserts and Desertification,” reflecting the United Nations’ concern about this issue. However, the protection of endangered animal species is also a highlighted topic.
Recognizing this, Colombian authorities have organized an environmental day with meaningful activities to raise community awareness about the importance of protecting the environment and rare animal and plant species.
A significant number of endangered turtles have been released back into the Caribbean Sea. Most of these turtles were nurtured from a young age, while others were caught by fishermen and later released back into the ocean. Typically, these include species such as Hawksbill turtles, Green turtles, and Caguana turtles, which are currently on the brink of extinction.
The turtle release event took place on Environmental Day, a program sponsored by the United Nations to enhance public interest, particularly among indigenous people, in environmental protection issues while promoting social activities for the benefit of the impoverished.
Every year, many precious animal species, including turtles, parrots, birds, and frogs, are smuggled out of Colombia. Most of them are sold to the United States, Europe, and Asia. However, during transportation, a significant number of these animals die, increasing the risk of extinction for these species.
