“We did not breed this variety with the intention of setting a record. This plum was picked from a regular tree, which currently has 150 other plums on it. We were incredibly surprised when we saw it for the first time,” Dean revealed.
The plum weighed 480 grams when harvested, but it lost some moisture, reducing its weight slightly.
The tree producing this giant plum is of the Autumn Treat variety, taking about 7 months to grow and starting to bloom in early September. This year’s harvest features particularly large plums that are crispy and sweet.
“Our area has a very favorable climate, which greatly aids the growth of various plants. Every year, we also send soil samples for testing to replenish any missing nutrients,” Dean explained.
Dean and Deon have been growing plums for 8 years. Previously, they had no knowledge of this fruit. “The farm has a top expert on plum varieties, helping us increase both quantity and quality,” Dean said.
