According to a report released by the Canadian Ministry of Environment on April 22, this year’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation levels are said to be the highest on record, as the Earth’s protective ozone layer continues to thin.
The report indicates that UV radiation reaching the Earth has increased by 4% this summer, resulting in a higher risk of sun exposure than ever before. It also mentions that cases of skin cancer, sunburn, cataracts, and other related conditions are rising in correlation with the UV radiation levels.
Scientists recommend that people avoid sun exposure between 11 AM and 2 PM, when the radiation is most intense. Additionally, they advise the public to use sunscreen year-round as it helps block UV rays, and to wear hats and sunglasses when outdoors.
Statistics show that the rate of skin cancer has increased by 3-5% annually in recent years.
