Moderate consumption of red wine or aspirin may help prevent deafness and hearing loss caused by noise exposure or certain antibiotics, according to American researchers.
In a study, scientist Jochen Schacht from the University of Michigan and his colleagues discovered that antioxidants found in red wine, green tea, and aspirin could help neutralize free radical molecules that damage the hair cells in the inner ear. This may help prevent hearing loss in individuals exposed to loud noises or using strong antibiotics.
They used salicylate to prevent the destruction of hair cells in patients suffering from hearing loss or deafness caused by gentamicin—a potent antibiotic commonly used to treat severe acute ear infections.
“Antioxidants such as resveratrol found in red wine and salicylate, a component of aspirin, help neutralize free radical molecules and are believed to be used to combat certain types of damage that cause hearing loss,” Schacht stated.
