The National Animal Husbandry Institute has developed a method for crossbreeding local buffalo with Murrah buffalo from India to counteract the trend of decreasing weight in domestic buffalo, which has not been improved for many years.
Through experiments involving local female buffalo producing one litter, artificial insemination was performed using frozen Murrah semen.
Post-breeding, the crossbred buffalo showed growth in accordance with expected patterns, reaching weights of 440-450 kg by 36 months of age; however, the fertilization rate was only 33.5%.
In contrast, when male Murrah buffalo were directly mated with local females, the conception rate reached an impressive 70.5%.
Additionally, the Mountain Research and Development Center of the Institute has finalized a process for integrating crossbred calves with local buffalo herds to enhance herd composition and reproduction.
