A dog trapped in a volcanic crack for two days was rescued by a Hawaiian explorer who had to climb inside to pull the dog out.
Kawika Singson, a Hawaiian explorer, is quite well-known on the island for his adventures and often embarks on daring trips near volcanoes to capture photos of eruptions.
The dog fell into a crack on Kilauea volcano, Hilo Island.
So, when a dog was reported to have fallen into a volcanic crack, everyone immediately thought of Kawika Singson.
The dog had been missing for two days, and a GPS collar showed that it had fallen into a crack on Kilauea volcano, Hilo Island. Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes in Hawaii, continuously erupting for over three decades.
Kawika Singson shared: “I received a message about a dog that had fallen into a volcanic crack in the rainforest and was asked to help. I drove about 160 kilometers to try to rescue the dog.”
Kawika Singson descends into the narrow crack to rescue the dog Malka.
The dog’s name is Malka, and it belongs to a teenager named Cody. After discussing with Cody and the rescue team, Kawika Singson decided to move down into the crack, knowing he would face sudden high temperatures and toxic gases.
Video footage of the incident shows Kawika Singson equipping himself with necessary gear and starting his descent into the crack. The man spotted the dog trapped between rocks. He grabbed its collar before securing it with a safety rope and slowly pulled it up from the narrow crack toward the waiting rescue team above.
Ultimately, Kawika Singson pushed the dog out of the crack and gradually climbed back out. Fortunately, the dog was unharmed after falling about 7 meters and spending two days without food or water.
The successful rescue of the dog from the volcanic crack adds to Kawika Singson’s achievements in an area that not everyone is brave enough to approach.
In 2013, Kawika Singson endured the intense heat of lava flows to capture a photo from the summit of a Hawaiian volcano. He stood on a thin layer of rock just centimeters away from magma, with his tripod and shoes catching fire.
In 2015, he attempted to capture clear footage of Kilauea volcano erupting. The stunning footage documented the area between Waikupanaha and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, offshore from the Big Island.
