A man in the U.S. was shocked to discover that a squirrel had hidden around 158 kg of nuts under the hood of his car.
When a car makes strange noises, one might suspect common issues like loose wiring or engine problems. However, it could also be squirrels ‘borrowing’ the vehicle as a food storage space.
Squirrels have repeatedly hidden hundreds of kilograms of food in Bill Fischer’s car.
This is the issue that Bill Fischer, from Fargo, North Dakota, has been facing. The 56-year-old man revealed that he has been frequently outsmarted by squirrels, which have hidden hundreds of kilograms of food in his vehicle.
Every autumn, these rodents stockpile large quantities of food in the engine compartment, wheel wells, and even the back of the car. Bill Fischer believes that the culprits are red squirrels, known for their territorial behavior.
Bill Fischer has to spend hours retrieving the hidden fruits from his car. Notably, he never sees the squirrels near his garage until he discovers their food stash in the vehicle.
The amount of fruit collected filled 7 buckets, more than any previous year.
Discussing this unusual battle, Bill Fischer stated: “I have been dealing with red squirrels since 2013. They have repeatedly filled my car with nuts despite my efforts to remove them. However, this year, the amount of fruit I retrieved from the car was the largest, around 158 kg. That’s a record.”
In the photos that Bill Fischer posted on his personal Facebook page, many yellow-shelled nuts can be seen filling almost every crevice beneath the hood of his pickup truck.
Bill Fischer has tried various methods, such as placing a mixture of Tabasco sauce and hot peppers under the hood and parking the truck further away from trees, but none seemed effective. In previous years, the amount of nuts he collected filled 4 buckets, but this year it reached 7 buckets.
The good news is that the car still runs well after Bill Fischer’s cleanup. Although the cleaning process was labor-intensive, Bill Fischer humorously noted that he couldn’t help but laugh at the situation. He joked that this could serve as a reminder about potential issues if you don’t check your engine regularly.
