A girl controls a guidance robot at Diamond City Lucle |
A type of robot designed to assist the elderly and disabled with shopping was introduced at the Diamond City Lucle shopping complex in Kasuya, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, on February 9.
The robot stands 1.7 meters tall and is a collaborative production between Tmsuk and NTT Communications. It is connected to the internet via a wireless LAN system, which the robot uses to navigate and move by reading IC tags embedded in the floor. Customers can select the stalls they wish to visit on the robot’s touchscreen display, and the robot will escort them to their desired location. It also contains a compartment designed to hold goods.
Additionally, the robot features remote control capabilities, allowing customers to sit at their computers at home to check what items are available in the store. They can request the robot to take pictures using its built-in camera and communicate with sales staff.
