This week, the Spirit rover celebrates one full year on Mars, equivalent to two Earth years.
When Spirit landed in the Gusev Crater, it felt as though the ultimate destination—the Columbia Hills—was still too far away to explore. However, after one year on Mars, this little robot has finally reached its goal. It has arrived at Husband Hill, the highest point resembling the Statue of Liberty in the United States.
After capturing a wealth of images of Mars, Spirit began to move down the Columbia Hills.
Another rover named Opportunity, considered Spirit’s twin, has also made significant discoveries on Mars. After getting stuck in August, this rover continues its journey towards the Erebus Crater. Opportunity’s first birthday will be celebrated on December 12.
The exploration missions of Spirit and Opportunity have been extended multiple times and will continue until September 2006.
