The next-generation silicon WIMAX device from Intel, codenamed Rosedale 2, has been selected by 10 of the world’s leading WiMAX equipment providers to deliver new-generation solutions for WiMAX networks. Rosedale 2 is a low-cost system-on-a-chip device that supports the IEEE 802.16-2004 and IEEE 802.16e-2005 standards, enabling the creation of WiMAX modems for both mobile and fixed networks.
Rosedale 2 will leverage the advantages of mobile WIMAX networks that are being widely deployed around the world by infrastructure providers such as Alcatel. As part of a collaborative program aimed at accelerating the deployment of mobile WiMAX networks, Rosedale 2 is included in Alcatel’s global Interoperability Testing Program.

Therefore, devices utilizing Rosedale 2 are expected to be fully compatible with Alcatel’s Universal WiMAX (802.16e-2005) solution, which fundamentally supports mobile, semi-mobile, and fixed usage models.
Additionally, all current customers of Intel’s previous fixed solution, the Intel PRO/Wireless 5116 modem (codenamed Rosedale), including Airspan Networks, Alvarion, Aperto Networks, Axxcelera Broadband Wireless, Proxim Wireless, Redline Communications, Siemens Home and Office Communication Devices, and SR Telecom, plan to offer WiMAX solutions using Rosedale 2. Due to its complete pin compatibility with the Intel PRO/Wireless 5116 wireless modem, Rosedale 2 will provide an easy upgrade path for customers.
Intel is committed to collaborating with its customers to deliver high-speed wireless Internet access solutions that are easier and more cost-effective through the use of WiMAX networks. With the capability to support both network modes, Intel hopes to accelerate the deployment speed of WiMAX networks.
Rosedale 2 is capable of supporting mobile networks and is designed to allow device manufacturers to develop their modem products from fixed applications to mobile applications with just a simple software upgrade. With devices utilizing Rosedale 2, service providers can immediately choose to deploy a mobile WiMAX network or implement a fixed WiMAX network for the time being, and then easily and efficiently upgrade to a mobile network later.
Rosedale 2 is a new addition to Intel’s highly anticipated product line of mobile WiMAX solutions, which includes a mobile WiMAX PC card and a multi-band Wi-Fi/WiMAX radio device with a single chip, codenamed Ofer, which was announced earlier this year.
Rosedale 2 is currently being offered for testing to customers.
