In the Action Month for Food Hygiene and Safety 2006, the country recorded 22 food poisoning cases, affecting 534 people and resulting in 14 deaths, a significant increase compared to the same period in 2005.
Among these incidents, four major outbreaks (with over 50 cases each) were reported, including 10 deaths due to toxic mushrooms, two deaths from fish bile, and two from alcohol,” said Minister of Health Tran Thi Trung Chien in a report regarding the Action Month for Food Hygiene and Safety 2006 (from April 15 to May 15).
According to this report, during the “Action Month”, over 146,000 food production, processing, and trading facilities nationwide were inspected, with only 73.3% meeting hygiene standards. Nearly 20,000 facilities violated safety and hygiene regulations; as a result, over 2,000 were fined, and 117 facilities were shut down.
