Investigations reveal that two papers by Hwang in the scientific journal are fraudulent |
The prestigious American scientific journal, which previously published two controversial papers by South Korean scientist Hwang Woo-suk, has retracted both articles following investigations that revealed both studies were fraudulent.
The journal stated that for this reason, they “immediately and unconditionally retract both papers.”
Yesterday, Dr. Hwang publicly apologized and sought forgiveness from the South Korean people. He acknowledged responsibility for the errors but maintained that he had been deceived by his subordinate associates.
The case involving him—once celebrated for his stem cell research and regarded as a hero in South Korea—is currently under investigation by prosecutors.
According to local media, today, many scientists from Hwang’s research team have been prohibited from leaving the country. According to Yonhap News Agency, a total of 28 members of the research team have been asked to remain in South Korea for investigative purposes.
Dr. Hwang and his research team could face charges of fraud and embezzlement.
