M-Systems and Power Quotient have both unveiled 8 GB USB flash drives at the ongoing Computex IT event in Taipei. However, they claim that they will soon double the capacity of these memory devices by the end of this year.
Users looking forward to pocket-sized storage solutions for digital photos, files, music, and other data can expect to equip themselves with 16 GB USB flash drives by the end of the year.
M-Systems Flash Disk Pioneers are showcasing the DiskOnKey 8 GB USB drive at their booth during Computex IT this week. The company plans to release a product with double the capacity by the end of the year, based on the “speedy” work of chip developers.

Transcend from Taiwan has just launched its latest mini hard drive models called Storejet. The 2.5-inch portable Storejet hard drives, roughly the size of a notebook, come with capacities ranging from 80 GB to 120 GB, while a 200 GB version is promised to arrive by the end of Q3 this year.
The 1.8-inch Storejet hard drive from Transcend is even thinner, comparable to a passport, with a capacity of up to 60 GB. Transcend has also confirmed that an 80 GB version will be available in the coming months.
The company also showcased an 8 GB USB flash drive, but mentioned that upgrading to 16 GB is not straightforward. “It requires 4 controller chips for this 16 GB USB drive,” complained Joseph Chu, Transcend’s Chief Accountant. According to him, the 8 GB USB drive only needs two controller chips.
Other companies like A-Data Technology and TwinMOS Technologies also launched their USB drive models at Computex IT.
Power Quotient International introduced a USB drive shaped like a credit card, which fits into a jacket pocket and has a small USB connector that pops out from the back for connection to a PC or laptop. It also has a capacity of 2 GB, and the company has confirmed that a double-capacity version will be available by the end of the year.
