Residents living along the coast of Cam Xuyen District (Ha Tinh) have discovered a strange red discoloration in the sea, stretching approximately 3 kilometers. Local authorities have reported that this phenomenon has occurred previously and believe it may be caused by marine algae.
On the morning of March 25, residents noticed unusual changes in the sea water in the area of Thien Cam Town and Cam Nhuong Commune, Cam Xuyen District (Ha Tinh).
The unusual water has a murky red color, 50-100m wide, stretching approximately 3 kilometers. In areas where the discolored water appears, there is a foul smell when the waves wash ashore.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tue – Chairman of the People’s Committee of Thien Cam Town (Cam Xuyen District) stated that the red discoloration of the sea water has occurred over the past two days.
“Every year from March to May, this phenomenon appears in our coastal area for a few days. Relevant authorities have previously taken samples for testing and identified the cause as a type of marine algae,” Mr. Tue said.
From above, the red discoloration blends with the blue of the sea. The closer to the shore, the darker the water becomes.
