Seagate has unveiled the Seagate Cheetah 15K.5 series of high-capacity hard drives on April 17, featuring cutting-edge perpendicular recording technology. With a spinning speed of up to 15,000 RPM, it is touted as the fastest hard drive in the world today.
The Seagate Cheetah 15K.5 series, known for its astonishing speed, includes three capacity options: 73 GB, 146 GB, and 300 GB, all crafted using perpendicular recording technology. Seagate has stated that this series is a premium hard drive, specifically designed for enterprise use.
Perpendicular recording technology involves recording each magnetic field region vertically, perpendicular to the disk surface, rather than horizontally on the surface as is typical with conventional hard drives. This advanced technology allows for a reduction in diameter and a significant increase in disk capacity. Companies like HGST, Toshiba, and Fujitsu have also introduced several hard drives utilizing this technology; however, none have achieved the extreme spinning speeds of the Seagate Cheetah 15K.5.
Seagate has announced that it will begin selling the first Cheetah 15K.5 drives around early June of this year, although pricing has yet to be disclosed. The Seagate Cheetah 73.4 GB hard drive, spinning at 10,000 RPM, is already available in Vietnam for a price of $265. In contrast, a standard 80 GB hard drive, with a speed of 7,200 RPM, is priced at just over $70.
