Seagate Maxtor, a leading hard drive manufacturer, is set to launch a new network storage device capable of storing up to 1 TB of data, compatible with both Windows and Macs.
This device is the Maxtor Shared Storage II, featuring Gigabit Ethernet connectivity and two USB 2.0 ports for connecting flash drives or additional hard drives. It is also compatible with external storage systems like Maxtor OneTouch and Seagate Pushbutton USB, which can be used alongside the Maxtor Shared Storage II to expand capacity. The Shared Storage II utilizes two separate hard drives that can be mirrored for data protection. These drives operate at 7200 RPM (revolutions per minute) and have a 16 MB cache.
Similar to other network storage devices, the Shared Storage II can support both public and private folders. It also includes a “Drag and Sort” feature that automatically organizes image, music, and video files (up to 100 different file types). Users simply need to drag files into the icon on their desktop.
The Maxtor Shared Storage II measures 137 x 99 x 216 mm and weighs approximately 2.7 kg, making it suitable for both home and small business use. The Shared Storage II is expected to be available for purchase at the end of this month, with a price tag of around $900.
In comparison, the previously launched Shared Storage device utilized a single hard drive and had a maximum capacity of only 300 GB.
