On June 26th, an unusual incident occurred at Gordon Moore Park in Illinois, USA, attracting significant media attention. The event took place at 9:15 AM when a soccer field in the area suddenly collapsed, creating a massive sinkhole with a diameter of approximately 100 feet (about 30.5 meters) and a depth of 30 feet (about 9.1 meters).
According to the video recorded at the time of the incident, within seconds, the light poles, benches, and artificial turf of the soccer field were almost “swallowed up” and completely vanished from view.

Commenting on the incident, Michael Haynes, a local authority, stated that what happened on the soccer field looked like a scene from a post-apocalyptic movie: “The hole looks like a bomb just exploded there.”
Brian Hoener, the head of the sports club at Marquette Catholic High School, remarked that the consequences of this incident could have been much graver: “Just a week before the incident, there were about 60 or 70 people on the field during our soccer practice. Things could have been much worse than this.”
In light of this noteworthy event, the city’s mayor, David Goins, stated: “No one was on the field at the time, and no one was injured. However, all sporting events have now been canceled.”

Meanwhile, the operator of the New Frontier Materials quarry issued a statement to the Alton Telegraph confirming that the cause of the ground subsidence was due to the sports field being located on a limestone quarry operated by New Frontier Materials. They emphasized that ensuring safety is a top priority, and the company will cooperate with the city to address the issue as soon as possible.
