zPod is described as India’s first autonomous vehicle, developed using artificial intelligence created by Minus Zero itself. In other words, they have built AI software that teaches zPod how to drive itself. In practice, they have innovated AI with key computational capabilities drawn from how the human brain operates, as reported by Design Boom on December 12.
The AI software from Minus Zero is inspired by the way the human brain processes information through neurons. Consequently, the AI seeks to simulate how the brain solves problems, contributing to zPod’s learning, behavioral perception, adaptation, situational memory, and decision-making processes. According to the research team, by employing brain-inspired AI design, the autonomous vehicle can determine where to go and how, how to avoid obstacles and accidents on the road, as well as how to handle issues encountered, rather than relying solely on computer algorithms. In August 2023, Minus Zero allowed zPod to undergo road testing while autonomously transporting passengers.
To drive itself, zPod uses cameras instead of sensors to observe its surroundings.
From the AI software, Minus Zero developed True Vision Autonomy, a system installed in the autonomous vehicle zPod. This system is not only scalable but also operates in various situations. For self-driving, zPod utilizes cameras instead of sensors to observe and understand the road and surrounding conditions. The automated system, which includes both software and hardware, is designed to operate in real-time, enabling zPod to make quick decisions while driving autonomously. Minus Zero emphasizes that the technology focuses on safety, particularly in emergency situations, ensuring passenger safety.
zPod is also equipped with a GPS system for location purposes. As the cameras scan the surroundings, the vehicle can capture 360-degree images, predicting whether to continue moving forward or stop to yield to other vehicles. As soon as the cameras take real-time images and assess the environment, the images are processed by a computer system located in the seat.
Minus Zero stated that they installed two processing systems in the vehicle: an active system that enables full autonomy, while a backup system makes decisions in the event of a malfunction or engine trouble. zPod can accommodate four passengers seated across from each other on comfortable benches.
