To alleviate bloating and discomfort caused by overeating, experts recommend performing gentle clockwise abdominal massage.
The end of the year is typically a time when family and friends gather to enjoy meals together. Lavish dinners accompanied by drinks at the dining table can lead many to eat uncontrollably, resulting in bloating or indigestion.
According to experts, one of the simplest ways to relieve stomach pain, support digestion, and reduce bloating is through abdominal massage. This practice addresses various health issues, particularly those related to the stomach and intestines.
Dr. Ada Ooi, a traditional medicine physician and founder of 001 Skincare, states that simple massage techniques help food and fluids move smoothly through the digestive tract, enhance nutrient absorption, support bowel motility, and alleviate common issues such as bloating and indigestion. Abdominal massage also improves blood flow, releases accumulated tension, and boosts overall health. Previous studies have shown that evenly massaging the abdomen helps relax and regulate the nervous system.
“The parasympathetic nervous system is activated, reducing pressure on the diaphragm, which helps relax the muscles in both the shoulders and neck,” says Maximilian Schubert, medical director at Mayrlife.

To perform abdominal massage correctly, Ooi advises starting from the belly button, gently pressing with the palms in a circular motion clockwise (the natural digestive direction) for about 5 to 10 minutes. If you experience pain, discomfort, or nausea while massaging, you should stop immediately.
The ideal time to perform the massage is a few minutes before or after dinner. However, you can do this at any time during the day to enhance overall health.
While abdominal massage can temporarily relieve discomfort from bloating, experts recommend consulting a doctor if bloating persists for an extended period to find more permanent solutions and identify any underlying health issues.
