The Skype 2 beta allows users to make voice and video calls over the Internet. However, this is not a new service, as several instant messaging programs like Yahoo Messenger and ICQ have supported video conversations for quite some time.

Skype 2 delivers crisp audio and visuals, smooth motion, and impressive colors. Users can zoom in on images, choose to display them in a separate window, or watch videos in standard screen size.
However, call quality significantly decreases when using a slow connection (such as when sharing bandwidth with multiple users). The program seems to “favor” audio over video, which is somewhat acceptable, as minor video stuttering or noise is less bothersome than audio interruptions, which can be quite frustrating for users.
Skype 2 is compatible with a variety of webcams from different manufacturers, such as the Logitech QuickCam, priced at $75 (check the list here). The program is equipped with Video Effects software featuring Logitech’s Intelligent Face Tracking technology, which creates video effects that allow users to replace their images with avatars (emoticons) like aliens, movie stars, dancers, etc. The camera tracks all movements on the user’s face, and the avatar’s features change accordingly, creating amusing animations.
The contact management system in Skype 2 is also simpler than in previous versions. Additionally, it supports SkypeOut and SkypeIn services (making and receiving calls to landlines).
Experts from PC World (USA) tested the functionality of Skype 2 on the IPfones IP-700M, a USB handset resembling a mobile phone. The IP-700M makes controlling Skype easier as users can scroll up and down or enter numbers using keys. However, users still need to connect to a computer since much information does not display on the small LCD screen of the IP-700M. The audio quality is clear enough, though it cannot yet compete with mobile network phones.
