Dr. Vassilis Mougios and colleagues from Aristotle University in Thessaloniki, Greece, conducted a study involving 14 women with normal and overweight classifications, dividing them into two groups: the first group exercised on a treadmill at a moderate pace four times a week, while the second group exercised at a much faster pace, also four times a week. Both groups underwent a 3-month training regimen.
The research team ensured that women in both groups burned 370 calories per session.
After three months, participants in both groups lost weight, but the low-intensity group shed significantly more – approximately 3.17 kg compared to about 1.8 kg in the high-intensity group.
Although the volunteers in the high-intensity group lost less weight, their muscle tone improved compared to the other group.
Researchers recommend that for optimal health and body shape, a combination of both light and heavy exercise should be incorporated.
