Surprisingly, despite being much larger, the hawk did not dare to retaliate against this tiny bird.
The hawk, also known as the accipiter, belongs to the subfamily Accipitrinae and primarily falls within the genus Accipiter. Hawks are considered the most intelligent birds of prey according to research conducted by Dr. Louis Lefebvre. In Vietnam, hawks are commonly found in the Central and Southern regions.
Hawks are notorious predators, characterized by their sharp, hooked beaks, relatively long and broad wings, and extremely strong legs. An adult hawk can measure between 0.7m to 1m in length, with light brown plumage, broad wings, and a curved tail.
Hawks are known for their remarkable flying speed, capable of diving at speeds of up to 320 km/h. In the bird world, few species can match a hawk’s agility and cleverness.
Hawks are believed to have excellent vision, achieving a clarity of 20/2, which is about eight times better than that of a person with good eyesight.
While hawks are the “predators” that instill fear in many animals, they too can be attacked by a very tiny bird.

Photographer Gerardo Grassl captured the moment a Great Kiskadee continuously jumped on the back of a hawk, trying to peck at its head in the outskirts of San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador. Despite the hawk’s attempts to counterattack, the Great Kiskadee was undeterred by the risk of being killed at any moment and refused to stop.
According to the photographer’s speculation, this little bird seemed to be trying to protect its young. Ultimately, the Great Kiskadee flew away unharmed.
The Great Kiskadee (scientific name: Pitangus sulphuratus) is a bird in the family Tyrannidae and is the only member of the genus Pitangus. This species is found in various locations worldwide, including Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina. The Great Kiskadee measures between 25 to 28 cm in length and weighs between 53 to 71.5 grams. Its distinguishing features include a black head with a strong white stripe and a hidden yellow stripe.

The Great Kiskadee is typically found in sparse forests with some tall trees, including cultivated areas and near human habitats. This bird is highly vigilant and often attacks fiercely when it senses discomfort from a foe. Their fighting style usually involves flying high and diving to strike unexpectedly at the back or head of their opponent. Many birds, such as hawks, eagles, and falcons, have been defeated by the unpredictable actions of the Great Kiskadee.
