The principle of operation for this type of balloon is quite simple: before a meal, the balloon is inflated to create a feeling of false fullness, thereby limiting the amount of food intake. After the meal, the balloon automatically deflates.
Placing a balloon in the stomach to treat obesity is a procedure that involves inserting an inflatable balloon into the stomach using endoscopy to create a sensation of fullness, thus reducing the amount of food needed to be consumed daily.
To date, scientists continue to research and explore more effective treatments for obesity. (Source: nivaranhealth).
Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have recently successfully developed a smart balloon that can help individuals control their weight and lose weight effectively.
According to a study published on December 3 in the journal Device, the operating principle of this balloon is quite simple: before each meal, the balloon is inflated to create a feeling of false fullness, limiting the amount of food intake. After the meal, the balloon automatically deflates.
In animal trials, results showed that this balloon’s ability to control hunger is remarkable. Specifically, the amount of food consumed by the animals decreased by up to 60% compared to normal.
Professor Giovanni Traverso, one of the lead authors of the study, shared: “Our idea was to create an adjustable gastric balloon. The balloon will be inflated before meals to suppress hunger, and then deflate between meals.”
This is considered a breakthrough in the field of obesity treatment, especially for those who do not wish to undergo surgery or do not respond well to weight loss medications.
