Three Polish students have won the international James Dyson Award 2022 for their smart medical bandage equipped with sensors that assess wound healing.
When a wound is bandaged, it can be challenging to determine how well it is healing. The most common mistake during the healing process is changing the bandage too frequently, which can lead to infections and tissue disruption.
The trio from the Warsaw University of Technology has been honored as the grand prize winners of the James Dyson Award 2022 for their invention of a smart bandage that is integrated with technology to monitor the healing status of wounds.
The smart bandage, named SmartHEAL, can detect infections without the need to remove or disrupt the tissue underneath the skin.
SmartHEAL provides crucial data on the pH level of the wound, which can indicate how well the wound is healing.
The smart medical bandage won the international James Dyson Award this year.
Each bandage features an electronic pH display on the fabric surface and an antenna to connect with a nearby mobile phone or tablet.
Sensors integrated into the wound bandage to detect infections.
The research team stated that this invention helps avoid the most common mistake in the wound healing process: changing the bandage too frequently.
