An automotive security system can prevent theft by recognizing the unique fingerprints of the driver when they pull the car door handle.
According to Hitachi, the company that developed this technology, the system will thwart thieves even if they have stolen the car keys. This is because the door will only open if it successfully recognizes the unique fingerprint of the driver.
The technology was showcased at the Tokyo Motor Show 2005, which took place from October 22 to November 6. A sensor device located behind the door handle uses near-infrared light to identify fingerprints. The handle is designed to position the driver’s hand correctly every time they open the door, ensuring the system accurately reads the fingerprints.
Hitachi has not yet disclosed how reliable the system is. However, previous tests have shown that its accuracy is comparable to fingerprint recognition systems and does not require extensive data storage for each user. Hitachi has also designed systems that use fingerprints to control access to ATMs, entryways of certain buildings, and even computers.
