German Scientists Invent Smart Coaster That Can Order More Beer
Two scientists, Andreas Butz from the University of Munich and Michael Schmitz from Saarland University, have developed an innovative electronic coaster that can summon a server to refill beer when the keg runs dry.
Under the surface of the coaster lies a thin metal plate equipped with sensors that react to the weight of the beer glass, as well as the position and movement of the coaster itself. This sensor system transmits information via radio waves to the bar, where the signal is received and decoded by a computer.
Customers can urgently request more beer by tapping on the coaster or order several beers by showing a stack of coasters indicating the number of drinks needed.
The inventors have indicated that this smart coaster has even more capabilities. It could be used to evaluate a karaoke performance or provide feedback on a referee’s decision during a sports match displayed on television.
A supportive opinion can be recorded by raising the glass, causing the sensor to move. Conversely, an opposing opinion is captured by lifting the glass, flipping the coaster upside down, and placing the glass on the metal plate, which triggers a dual movement of the sensor.
