The earthquake on September 5 in Sichuan, China, has resulted in dozens of fatalities and significant material damage.
A powerful earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale struck Sichuan Province in southwestern China on September 5. According to Chinese officials, at least 65 people have died, 12 are missing, and 248 have been injured as a result of the quake.
According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, the earthquake occurred in the mountainous area of Luding County, Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. In the image, a headquarters of the Chinese fire brigade is damaged.
China Central Television (CCTV) reported that most of the fatalities were recorded in Garzê, while several cases occurred in the nearby city of Ya’an.
The earthquake also triggered landslides and damaged telephone lines in many areas. Additionally, several aftershocks occurred, including one measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale.
Sichuan authorities reported that more than 1,000 soldiers have been dispatched to the scene to assist in search and rescue operations. Residents in the affected areas have been provided with tents, blankets, and folding beds.
Residents of Luding County were evacuated by boat after the earthquake.

Sichuan Province is located at the intersection of tectonic plates, making it prone to earthquakes. In June, two earthquakes resulted in at least four deaths.
The earthquake occurred while Chengdu, the provincial capital of Sichuan, was under lockdown. A resident named Chen reported that people in his residential area could only run to the yard as they were not allowed to leave the building, according to the Guardian.
