An Giang Province has invested billions of VND to purchase equipment for waste collection and treatment, aiming to reduce the direct dumping of waste into the Tien River and Hau River—one of the main causes of the increasing environmental pollution in these rivers.
The province has also directed localities to strictly implement environmental sanitation measures, relocate 100% of households on rivers and canals, and enhance inspections and penalties for facilities violating the Environmental Protection Law.
Additionally, the province has planned to increase the distance between fish farms and has guided the owners of these farms to adopt measures to minimize water pollution in the rivers.
Currently, An Giang is calling for investment to construct a waste treatment plant with a capacity of 300 m3 per day for Long Xuyen City, Thoai Son District, and Chau Thanh District while also requesting state support for the project to relocate houses from rivers and canals.
The pollution level of the water in the Tien River and Hau River flowing through An Giang Province is at an alarming level, primarily because 70% of the waste and wastewater in this area is directly dumped into the canals that flow into these two rivers. Monitoring results from the An Giang Department of Natural Resources and Environment show that most of the tested water sources are of poor quality.
Moreover, regular waste from thousands of fish farms, ponds, and the residual pesticides and fertilizers from over 250,000 hectares of agricultural land, along with untreated waste from 14 frozen seafood processing plants, have further exacerbated the water pollution issue in these rivers.
