Sony has officially released single-layer Blu-ray discs on May 9, featuring advanced Blu-ray recording technology named AccuCORE. The dual-layer Blu-ray discs are set to be available for purchase in early June 2006.
These Blu-ray discs support data recording at a speed of 2x, which translates to a data transfer rate of up to 72 Megabits per second (approximately 9 MB per second). AccuCORE technology offers high stability and flexibility for Blu-ray disc recording.
The Blu-ray discs released in this batch include the BD-R 25 GB (write-once) and BD-RE (rewritable) at prices of $20 and $25 per disc, respectively. The upcoming dual-layer Blu-ray discs, BD-R 50GB and BD-RE 50GB, will retail for $48 and $60 each, respectively, when they launch in early June.
Fans of the Blu-ray disc format can purchase enough Blu-ray discs for their collection, as the first Blu-ray players will not be officially available until June 25. Consequently, the official release of the blank Blu-ray discs has been delayed by more than a month compared to Sony’s initial schedule.
