The Ministry of Finance has issued document No. 15597/BTC-CST agreeing with the Ministry of Information and Communications to temporarily suspend the collection of fees for the issuance, modification, and maintenance of Vietnamese domain names.
This response from the Ministry of Finance addresses the request outlined in document No. 2213/BBCVT-KHTC from the Ministry of Information and Communications, which calls for a suspension of fees related to Vietnamese domain names, as outlined in section I of the fee schedule for licensing and managing domain names and internet addresses in Vietnam, issued under Decision No. 28/2005/QD-BTC dated May 13, 2005, by the Minister of Finance.
According to the Ministry of Finance, not collecting fees for Vietnamese domain names will encourage the use of internet domain names in Vietnamese, facilitating the dissemination of Vietnamese information online. It is known that previously, the Vietnam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC), the agency responsible for implementing and licensing Vietnamese domain names, had proposed a registration fee of around 6 USD (approximately 100,000 VND).
VNNIC has reported that as of now, there are 13,000 registered and licensed .vn domain names, of which about 5,000 are Vietnamese domain names.
