On December 13, the South Korean government announced its intention to enhance smart robotics technology and production capabilities, aiming to build a smart robotics industry valued at 100 trillion won (approximately 96.8 billion USD) by 2020.
During a national technology and science committee meeting chaired by Minister of Science and Technology Oh Myung in Seoul, policymakers indicated that smart robots hold significant potential to become a key driver of the country’s development.
South Korea has planned to meet this potential by strengthening cooperation between the government and private economic sectors in building technological infrastructure, while closely adhering to the outlined strategy.
In the three-phase action plan presented at the conference, companies are determined to produce robots that meet consumer demand, with the goal that these machines will not only be useful to humans but also become companions.
To support this initiative, the government will facilitate the education and training of 20,000 specialists and establish a modern robotics industrial complex near Seoul.

A Ministry of Science official stated, “If everything goes smoothly, South Korea could become one of the top three countries manufacturing smart robots in the world.“
The plan indicates that South Korea has the potential to capture 15% of the global smart robotics market by 2013, with a total production value reaching 30 trillion won that year. The total export volume is expected to exceed 20 billion USD, creating jobs for 100,000 workers.
South Korea aims to become a world leader in the field of micro-technology by managing over 30 applied technology sectors commercially by 2015, sectors that could generate millions of dollars in export revenue.
