An Australian company has developed a speed alert system for drivers who exceed the legal speed limit. The device can also assist parents in monitoring their children’s driving.
The product, named SpeedAlert, links real-time location data and speed, supported by the Global Positioning System (GPS), with a database of speed limits stored on the driver’s PDA or mobile phone.
Smart Car, a technology company based in Sydney, has stated that they will persuade the government to promote the development of in-car technology. The product is expected to hit the market by the end of the year.
The device does not need to be permanently mounted on the car’s dashboard; it can be easily removed. When the driver exceeds the speed limit, the speed will be displayed on the PDA, accompanied by an audible alert if the driver does not reduce their speed. Upon approaching a school zone, a voice alert will sound, and the screen will show the allowed speed limit.
Australian design engineer Michael Paine mentioned that the device also has the capability to record instances of speeding, allowing parents to monitor their children’s driving behavior.
