Over the past decade, Vietnam has successfully implemented barcode operations by participating in international barcode organizations. However, businesses and organizations have primarily focused on exploiting traditional one-dimensional barcodes.
This observation was made by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) at the 6th Vietnam Quality Conference. The conference, organized by MoST, commenced on the morning of October 27 with the theme “Productivity and Quality – The Key to Development and Integration” and will run until the end of October 28.
During the Quality Decade from 1996 to 2005, thousands of products bearing Vietnamese barcodes starting with the digits 893 have been circulating in both domestic and international markets.
The implementation of barcodes helps Vietnamese enterprises enhance productivity and quality while reducing unnecessary costs thanks to a unified numbering system, accuracy, and automatic barcode scanning. The barcode operations are not limited to manufacturing and business sectors; they have also been expanded to other areas such as employee identification, baggage management, and customer service at airports.

Currently, there are more than 4,600 businesses across the country applying barcodes. Nonetheless, Vietnam primarily utilizes traditional one-dimensional barcodes.
Other types of codes and automatic identification tools, such as radio frequency identification, are still in the research phase and lack effective measures for organizations and businesses to adopt.
This is indeed a challenge that needs to be addressed in Vietnam’s barcode operations during the 2005-2010 period, according to the MoST. Additionally, Vietnam needs to promote the application of barcodes in food traceability, public health, civil servant management, and national identification.
