An Internet security expert has recently warned users about a dangerous spoofed Google toolbar designed for phishing purposes.
This fake Google toolbar is primarily distributed via instant messaging (IM) and appears to be a new variant of the highly dangerous CoolWebSearch Trojan, according to FaceTime Security Labs. Previously, CoolWebSearch had never been distributed through IM.
The sole function of this spoofed Google toolbar is to capture users’ credit card details. Notably, the redirect function to adult websites, which is typically seen in variants of CoolWebSearch, has not been activated in this version.
Recently, users of instant messaging services have become increasingly susceptible to being tricked into downloading dangerous toolbars. Typically, these toolbars integrate into web browsers, facilitating quicker and easier access to search service provider websites.
Phishing attacks via IM have become more prevalent, utilizing increasingly “professional” methods that are harder to detect.
Phishing is a type of attack where electronic messages, texts, or websites typically impersonate reputable companies to steal personal information or user account details.
