After a week of separation surgery, 15-month-old French twin boys Mohamed and Souleyman (who were conjoined at the lower spine) are stable and have experienced no complications.
This marks the first spinal separation surgery performed in France.
Dr. Annie Lando, who was directly involved in the surgery, joyfully told the press, “It is a wonderful feeling for the surgical team to see the boys moving their little legs just like before the operation. Everyone has been eagerly awaiting this moment.” According to Dr. Lando, the decision to separate the twins was a gamble, as it could have resulted in complete paralysis for them.
The surgery lasted five hours and was performed by Dr. Gabriel Lena, head of the pediatric neurology department at La Timone Hospital. The doctors stated that with their current progress, the boys may soon be able to walk normally.
Mohamed and Souleyman may be able to leave the hospital within the coming weeks to return home to the Avignon area, but they will need to be monitored for many years by doctors in Marseille and local practitioners, as they still face the risk of paralysis in their legs.
