Scientists from Purdue University in the United States have developed a portable device that can detect minute traces of explosives or toxic chemicals contained within luggage in just a few seconds.
By “sniffing” the surface of the luggage, the device can determine whether there are hazardous chemicals inside based on chemical samples inadvertently left behind by perpetrators when they touch the luggage. The research team leader, R. Cooks, stated, “The device will be very useful for screening suspicious luggage at airports or train stations.” Since the device can operate on various surfaces such as leather and clothing, it could also help trace individuals involved in the use of chemicals.
