Last night, Super Typhoon Manyi entered the East Sea, becoming Typhoon Number 9 with gusts reaching level 15, before gradually weakening. The cold air will cause a decrease in temperatures in the Northeast and North Central regions today.
Super Typhoon Manyi Enters the East Sea
According to the National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting, at 4 AM on November 18, the storm’s center was located at approximately 18.0 degrees North latitude and 118.9 degrees East longitude, over the eastern waters of the North East Sea. The strongest winds near the center of the storm were at levels 11-12 (103-133 km/h), with gusts reaching level 15. The storm was moving northwest at a speed of about 25 km/h.
At 4 AM on November 19, the storm continued moving west-northwest at about 20 km/h and further weakened over the North East Sea; it was approximately 370 km northeast of the Paracel Islands with wind speeds of level 10 and gusts of level 12.
At 4 AM on November 20, the storm was moving west-southwest at about 15 km/h, continuing to weaken over the western part of the North East Sea; it was about 210 km northwest of the Paracel Islands with wind speeds of level 8 and gusts of level 10.
At 4 AM on November 21, the storm had moved southwest at a speed of about 10 km/h, gradually weakening into a tropical depression, and then into a low-pressure area offshore of Central Vietnam with wind speeds of level 6.
Super Typhoon Manyi has entered the East Sea, becoming Typhoon Number 9 of 2024.
The eastern waters of the North East Sea experienced strong winds of levels 8-9, with winds near the storm’s center reaching levels 10-12, gusts up to level 15, and waves as high as 3.0-5.0 meters, near the storm’s center reaching 5.0-7.0 meters; the sea was extremely rough. Ships operating in these hazardous areas are at risk of being affected by thunderstorms, whirlwinds, strong winds, and high waves.
Cold Air Moving Slowly
According to the National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting, as of November 18, the cold air mass is reported to be moving southward.
Around November 18, this cold air mass will affect some areas in the Northeast of Northern Vietnam; subsequently impacting other areas in the Northeast and North Central regions, and some places in the Northwest and Central North regions. Northeastern winds inland will be at levels 2-3, and coastal areas at levels 3-4.
From the night of November 18, the Northeast of Northern Vietnam and Thanh Hoa will experience colder temperatures at night and in the early morning; from November 20, the Northern and North Central regions will have cold nights and mornings. The lowest temperatures during this cold spell in Northern and North Central Vietnam will generally range from 18-20 degrees Celsius, with some mountainous areas dropping below 15 degrees Celsius.
At sea: In the Gulf of Tonkin, from the night of November 18, there will be strong Northeastern winds of level 6, gusts reaching levels 7-8; the sea will be rough; waves will be from 2.0 to 3.5 meters high.
In the North East Sea (including the waters of the Paracel Islands), Northeastern winds will be strong at levels 6-7, gusts reaching levels 8-9; the sea will be very rough; waves will be from 2.0 to 4.0 meters high.
Due to the influence of disturbances in the upper easterly winds combined with the cold air, from November 18-19, there will be rain in the Northern and Central North regions, with showers and thunderstorms in some areas, and locally heavy rain. Thunderstorms may cause whirlwinds, lightning, and strong gusts.
Heavy rain and thunderstorms accompanied by whirlwinds, lightning, and strong gusts may impact agricultural production, causing trees to fall, damaging houses, transportation infrastructure, and other facilities.
Localized heavy rain may lead to flooding in low-lying and basin areas; flash floods in small rivers and streams, and landslides on slopes. Strong winds and high waves at sea may affect the operations of ships and other activities.
