Enjoying and frequently traveling far, engaging in intellectual games, and having healthy aging parents are three among many factors that contribute to a younger appearance.
These factors have been summarized by American scientists after 10 years of research.
The study shows that compared to others of the same age, those who appear much younger exhibit certain characteristics: They have stable and healthy marital relationships alongside a satisfying sex life; they maintain friendships with people of all ages without class distinctions; and they have small families. Younger-looking individuals tend to be very active and healthy, with a positive inclination to participate in outdoor activities such as hiking or team sports. They enjoy deep, restful sleep, wake up refreshed and ready to work, have attractive physiques, and maintain normal to low blood pressure.
Among those studied who look younger than their actual age, around 10-15% are vegetarians. Most of them only drink lightly with friends or hardly consume alcohol at all. The ratio of non-smokers to smokers is 20:1.
Thus, only a small portion of youthful longevity can be attributed to genetics; most depends on individual choices, from exercise and diet to mental training.
Exercise – The Secret to Staying Young
A passion for physical activity is a crucial factor for longevity. Exercise helps the body burn excess fat while stimulating mental excitement.
If you’re not yet in the habit of exercising, scientists recommend starting with 30-45 minutes of walking at least three times a week, gradually increasing the duration and intensity.
Establish a gradual and consistent exercise routine that can be sustained long-term and become part of your lifestyle. Swimming, dancing, aerobics, and gentle exercises are all beneficial for health. They improve flexibility, endurance, and rectify any physical imbalances. After an enthusiastic workout, your metabolism rate will remain elevated for several hours. Active engagement also leads to the release of a small amount of growth hormone, which helps build and maintain muscle.
Balanced Nutrition
A diverse diet is key to achieving balance. About 60% of our food intake should consist of complex carbohydrates, including various beans and grains. Aim to include 5% fruits and vegetables in your meals. Avoid consuming more than 5-10% saturated fats, particularly from animal sources.
Opt for several small meals that are enjoyable. Chew slowly and consistently. Avoid rushing through meals and stop eating as soon as you feel satisfied.
Reduce salt intake. Cut down on sugar, replacing it with fruits whenever possible. Vitamin C found in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains contributes to vibrant skin. Coffee can hinder the absorption of all vitamin groups.
Mental Exercise
The more you use your brain, the more you enhance its functions. Develop your vocabulary and imagery skills by reading new books.
The brain thrives on new experiences, so create different stimuli by reading a specialized magazine you’re familiar with. Gradually increase the difficulty of your exercises.
Engage in language games to stimulate creativity and expression. You can also practice mental agility by closing your eyes and listening to unfamiliar music. Try to visualize what it conveys. Do other pieces of music evoke similar feelings and imagery for you? Observe a group of people in public discreetly, imagining their personalities based on their voices, attitudes, and behaviors.
