Officials from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) have announced that they will be adding four ASEAN countries—Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore—to their list of nations that will receive tsunami warning equipment in areas prone to significant earthquakes in the northwest Pacific region.
The warning equipment is designed to forecast the timing of tsunami waves hitting coastlines following strong earthquakes of 6.5 magnitude or higher. Information will be relayed to 65 marine weather forecasting agencies across 10 countries within 20 to 30 minutes after an earthquake occurs.
Previously, the JMA had included Russia, South Korea, China, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea on the list of countries set to receive tsunami warning equipment.
