A recent error in an upgrade has caused the antivirus security application Symantec to mistakenly identify the Zlob Trojan within the open-source software Nullsoft Scriptable Install System (NSIS).
Currently, Symantec has not issued an official comment regarding this incident.
The reason for this “misidentification” is due to a bug in the virus detection upgrade released on July 1 by Symantec. However, this issue was resolved by July 3.
This error led Symantec to either remove or quarantine files suspected of being infected with the Zlob Trojan. Only version 2.17 of NSIS was adversely affected by Symantec’s “confusion.”
Nullsoft Scriptable Install System is a standard solution that allows software developers to install their applications on any system. Many applications, such as the multimedia application WinAmp and the antivirus software Kaspersky, utilize this solution.
This is not the first time Symantec has mistakenly identified NSIS as malware. This marks the fourth instance of Symantec’s misidentification of NSIS.
