The Invisibility Shield can make a person standing behind it blend into the surrounding environment during the day.
After successfully developing the Invisibility Shield in 2022, the company Invisibility Shield Co based in London, UK, introduced its second-generation invisibility shield on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter. Among the showcased products is the “Megashield”, the largest shield the company has ever created, as reported by Design Boom on March 27. Additionally, the Invisibility Shield is available in Mini and Full sizes.

This shield is made from a high-quality transparent polycarbonate sheet that can be stood upright using a polycarbonate frame at the back. A series of tall, slender lenses are embedded within, each lens running vertically from the top to the bottom of the shield. When a user stands or hides behind the device, the lenses diffuse the surrounding light, which is reflected by the user’s body across the entire front of the shield. Simultaneously, the lenses also diffuse the light reflected by the background scenery.
Since the user is much smaller than the background scene, the light from their body essentially gets overshadowed by the light from the background. As a result, when someone observes the shield from the front, they will only see the diffused background light, blending seamlessly into the surrounding scenery. The shield works best when the user wears light-colored clothing. Regardless of how far away the observer stands, the effect remains unchanged. The invisibility shield has various applications, such as concealing people or objects for entertainment purposes or wildlife observation.
The Full-size shield measures 99 cm in height and 69 cm in width, while the Megashield has dimensions of 183 x 122 cm. The smallest type, Mini, measures 30.5 x 20 cm, suitable for hiding small objects on a table. All three types are durable, lightweight, and more portable than the original version. Additionally, they are fully waterproof, do not require batteries, and are made from 100% recycled materials. This is the result of over four years of the research team’s focus on improving optical technology to make humans and objects invisible during the day.
