J. Tarara, a scientist from the Agricultural Research Service in Washington, USA, has introduced a new technique that helps grape growers accurately and quickly determine the ripeness of grapes for harvest without the need to visit the vineyard for inspections.
The determination of ripe grapes is based on the measurement of the weight of a network designed to catch falling ripe grapes. This network is equipped with sensors connected to a computer system. As a result, grape growers do not need to go to the vineyard; they can simply sit by a computer to measure the weight of the network once at the beginning of the grape-growing season and periodically thereafter. When the weight of the network reaches a predetermined level, it signals that it is time for the grape growers to harvest.
