Shanghai Aerospace City Project, with an estimated cost of over one billion yuan (123 million USD), is in its early stages and is expected to be completed by 2010
The Chairman of the Shanghai Aviation Industry Association, Mr. Yuan Jie, recently announced that the Shanghai Aerospace City Project, with a budget exceeding one billion yuan (123 million USD), is currently in the initial phase and is slated for completion in 2010. The project will also feature the upcoming China Space Technology Science Park to be introduced in Shanghai.
According to the outlined plan for Shanghai, the city aims to establish several industrial clusters focused on satellite applications, rocket propulsion, and various ground stations.
Mr. Yuan stated that this project supports the national strategy and aims to develop the aerospace industry in Shanghai, helping China’s aerospace sector catch up with global powers.
Shanghai has been involved in the national manned space project and possesses advantages in satellite and rocket manufacturing. The city is currently developing the Shanghai Aerospace City and making significant progress in forming industrial clusters.
Mr. Yuan noted that the manufacturing facilities for the Shanghai Aerospace City began construction last autumn, with the first phase expected to be completed by the end of this year.
Subsequently, the headquarters of the Shanghai Aerospace Industry Association and several research institutes will relocate to the Aerospace City. By 2010, when the second phase of the project is completed, total investments are expected to rise to two or three billion yuan.
The Shanghai Aerospace City is located in the Minhang District in southern Shanghai, covering an area of nearly 75 hectares, with a construction area of up to 30 hectares.
The Aerospace City will include several functional departments such as propulsion, electronics, and collaboration, alongside numerous research institutes. The city will also establish a large science popularization center for aerospace, which will be open to the public for visits.
