Paul Alexander Passes Away Shortly After Hospitalization Due to Covid-19
NBC confirmed that Paul Alexander, the man who lived for over 70 years in an “iron lung”, passed away on March 11 (local time). He left this world peacefully at the age of 78.
The cause of death has not been disclosed. However, in late February, Mr. Paul was hospitalized after contracting Covid-19. Although he was discharged later, eating and breathing became increasingly difficult for him.
Mr. Paul contracted polio in 1952 when he was just 6 years old, leaving him completely paralyzed from the neck down. To assist with breathing, he was placed in a device known as an “iron lung”, a large cylindrical machine that functions like a ventilator. After polio was brought under control in the United States, Mr. Paul became one of the few individuals who relied on this special device.

Despite advancements in medicine, Mr. Paul refused to use alternative support methods and remained committed to the “iron lung.” The Guinness World Records recognized him as the person who lived the longest using an “iron lung” in history.
Despite his condition, Mr. Paul inspired thousands around the world with his unwavering spirit. He held a law degree and had participated in legal consulting. He also published his own book, chronicling his journey of perseverance.
Last year, he began using TikTok to engage with his fans. At the time of his passing, his account had over 300,000 followers.
