As soon as the images were shared rapidly on social media, netizens engaged in lively discussions. Most were amazed by the striking visuals. Many people noted that this unique cloud resembled Mount Fuji in Japan. Others compared it to an image of a UFO, a cloud disk seemingly anchored at the mountain’s peak, hovering in the sky like a mothership surveying the hills below.

Previously, a similarly shaped cloud appeared over Ba Den Mountain around June 2022. While the cause remains unclear, this “hat”-shaped cloud phenomenon continues to attract significant attention from netizens.
According to the Hanoi Astronomical Society (HAS), this phenomenon is actually lenticular clouds. These clouds are stationary, lens-shaped, and form over high mountain ranges. Typically, lenticular clouds form parallel to the wind direction and can be categorized into three types: Altocumulus, Stratocumulus, and Cirrocumulus (respectively, middle-level, low-level, and high-level clouds), depending on weather conditions and topography.
When stable, moist air flows over a mountain, a series of standing waves can form on its leeward side. If the temperature at the crest of the wave drops below the dew point, the suspended moisture condenses, forming lenticular clouds.
As the airflow continues, descending into the trough of the wave, the cloud may evaporate, creating distinct edges. Under certain conditions, long chains of lenticular clouds can form near the crest of each successive wave in a cloud pattern, potentially extending hundreds or even thousands of kilometers.
