As of now, Vietnam is the only place where this special flower can be found. It not only has an eye-catching appearance but is also extremely rare.
In early 2022, botanists in Vietnam discovered a remarkably unique plant. After a thorough research process, experts confirmed that this is a new endemic species of Vietnam: Deinostigma serratum.
Endemic plant: Deinostigma serratum.
Deinostigma serratum, scientifically classified as Deinostigma serratum F.Wen, L.N.Tuan & D.Dien, belongs to the African violet family (Gesneriaceae). It was discovered in the Phong Dien Nature Reserve (Thua Thien – Hue).
This beautiful flower grows on moist rock faces, around waterfalls, and stream banks. It catches attention at first glance due to its striking appearance. Unlike other Deinostigma species with serrated floral edges, Deinostigma serratum has broader leaves, shorter petioles, and smaller flower sizes.
The discovery of Deinostigma serratum adds another endemic plant species to Vietnam. It holds significant scientific value and enhances the landscape of the area where it is found.
Notably, despite being newly discovered, Deinostigma serratum is already at risk of extinction. It is classified as a vulnerable species (VU, D2) according to the IUCN Red List criteria. Currently, experts are making efforts to protect this unique flower.
