In a recent experiment, adult mice were subjected to different behaviors by injecting them with a special amino acid known as L-methionine. Following the injection, the mice displayed reduced confidence when exploring new environments and produced higher levels of stress hormones.
Dr. Szyf emphasized that their work highlights the importance of nutrition and supplements. He mentioned that one nutrient believed to affect methylation is folate, or folic acid. A deficiency in folate has been linked to an increased risk of developing various cancers, including breast cancer and colorectal cancer.
