Dolphins Communicate Like Humans Using Unique Names
Researchers from the United States have revealed that dolphins can recognize each other through distinct identities, much like humans do.
A study conducted by scientists at the University of St Andrews discovered that bottlenose dolphins use “names” instead of sounds to differentiate themselves from one another. This research spanned three years and involved wild dolphins.
Dr. Vincent Janik stated: “We captured wild dolphins as they approached the shore. In the shallow waters, we recorded the whistles of each individual and created a computer-generated sound for each dolphin“.
“We then played back these sounds to other dolphins and observed their reactions. This indicates that dolphins recognize the unique whistles of each individual rather than just general sounds“.
This finding is particularly fascinating as it suggests that dolphins have developed abilities similar to those of humans. Each individual dolphin has its own distinct “name” just like people do.
The research was conducted along the western coast of Sarasota Bay in Florida.
