Nyala Antelope Dives into Water to Escape Wild Dogs, Only to Face Greater Threats: Hippos and Crocodiles.
Guide Wayne Myburgh captured the dramatic encounter between a nyala antelope and its predators in Greater Kruger, South Africa, as reported by Latest Sightings on September 7. “During our morning drive, we heard that a pack of African wild dogs was chasing a nyala antelope towards the Quelea Dam. Knowing there was a crocodile and about 12 hippos living there, we thought things could get interesting and started driving there,” Myburgh recounted.
Chased by the wild dogs, the nyala antelope leaped into the water, believing it was the safest place to avoid becoming prey. However, while trying to defend itself from the pack, a hippo suddenly attacked it from behind to protect its territory. The nyala had to use its sharp horns to fend off the hippo before turning back to confront the wild dogs.

Struggling against two groups of enemies, the nyala encountered a third threat. While it was standing in the water, a crocodile stealthily approached and clamped its jaws onto the antelope’s hind leg, pulling it down. This time, the nyala was overpowered by the crocodile.
“After 13 years as a guide, it’s amazing to experience something you’ve never witnessed before. I tried to capture some scenes, but don’t forget to put down the camera and enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Myburgh shared.
Nyala Antelope (Tragelaphus angasii) is native to southern Africa. Measuring 135 – 195 cm in length and weighing 55 – 140 kg, this herbivorous species is known for its shy and cautious nature. They prefer to inhabit dense bush in savannas and near water bodies. They are preyed upon by lions, leopards, African wild dogs, baboons, and birds of prey.
