The Asian giant hornet is the number one enemy of honeybees, but this time, one hornet made a serious mistake and paid a heavy price.
The giant Asian hornet being torn apart by a swarm of honeybees.
A giant Asian hornet (Scientific name: Vespa mandarinia) took a very reckless action by invading the nest of a colony of honeybees alone. In terms of size, the hornet is more than twice as large as the honeybee.
However, the honeybees exhibited remarkable unity; upon discovering the intruder, they employed a ‘mass attack’ strategy, surrounding the hornet and using their body heat to kill it.
In fact, honeybees and hornets are frequent enemies of each other. Hornets often launch invasions, attacking honeybee nests to eliminate their rivals, which is why this species is also known as the “murder hornet.”
